This little boy definitely knew.
The moment he discovered his chocolate cake, he was more than happy to get stuck in. A little taste turned into a little more, curious fingers found the chocolate icing, and before long, his sweet little face was covered in chocolate.
And honestly? It was the cutest thing.
When the cake becomes the star of the show
For his first birthday Smash Cake photoshoot at Zoom Photo Studio in Dundee, we kept the setup simple, bright and timeless. Soft blue, creamy whites and a little wooden cake stand created a lovely, clean backdrop, letting all the attention stay exactly where it belonged — on this little birthday boy.
But it didn't take long for the cake to steal the spotlight.
He wasn't shy about tasting it, exploring it or making a lovely little mess along the way. Every moment felt natural. There was no need to encourage him to touch the cake or show him what to do. He was simply enjoying himself, one chocolatey bite at a time.
And those are often the moments I love most as a photographer.The tiny hands reaching for the cake. The concentration on a little face. The unexpected expressions and the way a simple birthday celebration can turn into something so full of personality.
Before long, chocolate was everywhere — including that adorable little face. And I think it's safe to say he thoroughly enjoyed his first birthday treat!
Why a Smash Cake photoshoot is so special
