A Smash Cake session starts before the cake
When a family arrives at my Dundee studio for a Smash Cake photoshoot, we don't start by putting a cake in front of the baby.
I like to begin with some simple portraits first.
Photographs of your little one on their own, and, if you would like, some photographs with Mum, Dad or their brothers and sisters too.
These first photographs are often quieter.
Your little one might be curious about the studio. They might look around, watch me carefully or give me one of those serious little expressions that parents know so well.
And I photograph all of it.
There’s no pressure for them to smile or “perform” for the camera.
I want to give them a little time to settle in and simply be themselves.
For one of my recent Smash Cake sessions in Dundee, this little boy came along with his big brother.
So, alongside his individual first birthday portraits, we were also able to capture some photographs of the two brothers together.
And I think those photographs become even more meaningful as the years go by.
Because it isn't only a photograph of a baby turning one.
It is a photograph of two brothers at that particular moment in their childhood.
And then comes the cake…
Once we've photographed those first portraits, it's time for the fun part.
The cake comes out.
And this is where every Smash Cake session becomes completely different.
Some babies see the cake and immediately start exploring.
Some dive straight in.
Some are absolutely delighted by the whole thing.
And some…
don't want anything to do with it. 😂
They might carefully touch it with one finger.
They might look at me as if to say “What exactly am I supposed to do with this?”
They might make the funniest little faces.
And sometimes they are much more interested in the decorations, the lights or everything else happening around them than they are in the cake.
And honestly?
That's absolutely fine.
I never want a Smash Cake session to become a situation where a baby is being encouraged to do something they don't want to do just because we are trying to get “the photograph”.
If they want to touch the cake, I photograph it.
If they want to taste it, I photograph it.
If they want to sit and stare at it, I photograph that too.
Because those little reactions are part of who they are.

The photographs aren't about getting covered in cake
When people hear the words Smash Cake photography, they often imagine a baby completely covered in icing.
And yes, that can happen.
But it doesn't have to.
The photographs I love most are often the ones in between.
A little smile.
A serious expression.
Tiny fingers covered in icing.
A curious look.
A laugh from something completely unexpected.
The way they look towards their brother.
The moment they reach for Mum or Dad.
A little bit of chaos.
A little bit of cake.
And lots of personality.
Those are the photographs that tell the story of what your child was actually like at one year old.
Because they won't always look like this
This is probably the part of photographing babies and children that I think about most.
We know they're growing.
We see it happening every day.
But because we're with them all the time, sometimes we don't realise just how quickly it happens.
The little hands become bigger.
Their faces change.
Their expressions change.
Their personalities continue to develop.
The way they sit, walk, laugh and interact with their brothers and sisters changes too.
And one day, you'll look at a photograph from their first birthday and realise just how little they were.
You might notice the tiny details you had forgotten.
The shape of their cheeks.
Their little hands.
That particular expression they used to make.
The way their older brother looked at them.
And suddenly the photograph becomes more than just a photograph.
It takes you back.
That is what I think makes a first birthday photoshoot so valuable.
A first birthday is also about the people around them
I don't want your Smash Cake photographs to be only about your baby.
If you'd like, we can include parents and siblings during the session too.
For this little boy, having his big brother there meant we could create some lovely photographs of the two of them together.
Those photographs aren't necessarily the ones you imagine when you first think about a Smash Cake session.
But imagine finding them years from now.
Two little brothers.
One turning one.
The other still small enough to stand beside him and be part of the celebration.
Those are the photographs that become part of your family's story.
Natural Smash Cake photography in Dundee
My approach to Smash Cake photography in Dundee is simple.
I don't want your little one to have to behave a certain way for the camera.
I don't need them to smile on command.
I don't expect them to sit perfectly still.
And I certainly don't want to turn their first birthday into a performance.
Instead, I create a beautiful little setting and give them the freedom to explore it.
I guide the session when needed, but I also leave room for the unexpected.
Because sometimes the photograph you didn't plan becomes your favourite one.
Your little one only turns one once
The cake will be eaten.
The decorations will eventually be packed away.
The first birthday will become another memory.
But the photographs will still be there.
Years from now, you may look at them and remember exactly how small they were.
You may laugh at the serious little face they pulled when they first saw the cake.
You may remember how their brother was beside them.
And you may realise that what you thought you were booking was simply a Smash Cake photoshoot…
but what you actually created was a little collection of photographs documenting a moment in your family's life that you can never get back.
And that's why I love photographing first birthdays.
Not because every baby loves cake.
Not because every session goes according to plan.
But because every child brings something completely their own.
And that's what I want to photograph.
